Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy joined the STEPMED team in 2010. This growing practice works in the clinical areas of neurology and physical rehabilitation in the adult as well as the paediatric fields. We also contribute in the Mental Health Sector. Services are rendered in the following areas:

  • In hospital (acute)
  • Out of hospital (sub-acute)
  • Home visits (chronic)
  • School visits (for children when necessary)
  • Retirement villages and frail care
  • Monthly paediatric group for children with special needs- Paeds@StepMed
  • Cognitive Work Hardening Program
  • Functional Capacity Evaluations

Our main aim is to treat our patients holistically and have an inter-disciplinary team approach. It is our goal to render an affordable and accessible service with practical outcomes for our patients. Our role in promoting and enabling function  issuing assistive devices is essential.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY IN THE PHYSICAL FIELD AND REHABILITATION

We have achieved additional qualifications in the treatment of neurologically based injuries. Conditions most commonly treated by us are:

PAEDIATRICS IN NEUROLOGY

Paediatric occupational therapy deals with the unique daily living challenges of children with disabilities. Our most treated conditions are:

FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY EVALUATIONS (FCE)

A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is a comprehensive standardised assessment, which is administered to evaluate the extent to which a client’s physical, psychosocial or cognitive symptoms may be affected by his/her injury or illness.

COGNITIVE THERAPY AND WORK HARDENING

We assist with return to work programs through work hardening which consists of work simulated tasks and activities.

EARLY INTERVENTION AND TYPICAL DEVELOPMENT

Infants being born prematurely have an immature nervous system and tend to have difficulty processing everyday stimuli. We have knowledge about typical development and implications of prematurity on development.

MENTAL HEALTH

With the increase in performance demands from our daily lives, it is not uncommon for individuals to experience coping difficulties leading to mental health challenges.
